Suicide at Work
Today on the podcast, I talk about a topic that is very emotive and challenging – suicide.
When a team member completes suicide, it affects more than just the family of that person.
While members of the family feel the effects the most, suicide affects the entire workplace and have a devastating impact on teams and team morale.

Some statistics about suicide
- London has one of the lowest suicide rates, whereas the Northeast and the South West have higher rates.
- The real figure for suicide is about 5 to 22 percent higher due to coroners criteria.
- Each suicide impacts around 100 people in terms of friends, family, and colleagues that knew them.
- Suicide is a public health issue.
- The workplace is the right place to talk about suicide.
- I do think we all have a role to play when it comes to suicide.
- People are very skilled at wearing a mask and you might not always be able to tell if someone is suicidal.
- Often, there’s a misconception that people who talk about suicide frequently, won’t actually take their own life. And I would say that’s not true.
