Suicide at Work
Today on the podcast, I talk about a topic that is very emotive and challenging – suicide.
When a team member completes suicide, it affects more than just the family of that person. That’s why it’s so important to talk about suicide and work. In this episode I outline how and why to do this. While members of the family feel the effects the most, suicide affects the entire workplace and have a devastating impact on teams and team morale.

Some statistics about suicide
- London has one of the lowest suicide rates, whereas the Northeast and the South West have higher rates.
- The real figure for suicide is about 5 to 22 percent higher due to coroners criteria.
- Each suicide impacts around 100 people in terms of friends, family, and colleagues that knew them.
- Suicide is a public health issue.
- The workplace is the right place to talk about suicide.
- I do think we all have a role to play when it comes to suicide.
- People are very skilled at wearing a mask and you might not always be able to tell if someone is suicidal.
- Often, there’s a misconception that people who talk about suicide frequently, won’t actually take their own life. And I would say that’s not true.
